LinkedIn Passes on Monster.com: Big Board Still Looking for Buyer

May 14, 2012 · Michael Wist

Shares of Monster Worldwide (NYSE: MWW) jumped over 20% on Friday, as rumors swirled that industry leader LinkedIn might be interested in acquiring the job board behemoth. As those rumors have been swept aside, Monster’s shares have reacted as expected, off about 4% in mid-day trading so far. Looking more closely at the situation with Monster, one has to wonder what its potential sale means for the job board industry and online recruiting in general. LinkedIn is enjoying a very successful ride as a publicly traded company, recently announcing a Q1 revenue jump of over 100%. Simply mentioning LinkedIn in… [Continue Reading]

Cyber Security Jobs: A New Warrior Emerges

February 24, 2012 · Michael Wist

Given the current political and economic climate in the U.S. and around the world, it’s a safe bet that jobs in Cyber Security and Information Assurance are going to represent two of the most robust government hiring sectors in the years to come. At the most basic level, human warfare is evolving beyond the physical battlefield, with soldiers, guns, tanks and artillery fading as the preferred tools of war. Of course, there will always be some form of that type of conflict. But as societies mature and advance, there is a growing distaste for the wanton death and violence of… [Continue Reading]

Overcoming Unemployment Discrimination

October 27, 2011 · Michael Wist

Recent articles in the New York Times and Forbes have discussed the increasingly common phenomenon of employers running ads only for job applicants who are currently employed or are only “recently unemployed”. The implication here, of course, is that applicants who are currently enduring long-term unemployment need not apply. And while this practice is clearly discriminatory, it’s not illegal – at least, not yet. The Obama Administration’s Jobs Bill contains provisions that would make this type of discriminatory hiring practice illegal, but even with such a provision, only the language of the posts on job boards is likely to change.… [Continue Reading]

Tax Credits for Hiring Veterans

August 24, 2011 · Matthew Blevins

In the midst of one of the worst economic downturns in U.S. history, it can be hard to get overly excited about like a single purposeful initiative, but if we can put on the blinders for a moment and take a closer look at the current efforts for “re-introducing” veterans of the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan into the workplace, there are some relevant, positive developments to be explored. I had read recently that many such veterans went overseas without much worry about what they would do upon their return to the states. After all, going into a war… [Continue Reading]

Amidst Terrible Job Market, Part Time Jobs are Popular

June 24, 2011 · Matthew Blevins

In the throes of the worst economic downturns since the Great Depression, the talk has focused on a few key metrics that are used to measure the economy as a whole. Of particular focus in the media are housing sales and prices, GDP growth, consumer confidence and, of course, the unemployment rate. At a stated rate of 9.1% nationally – and in reality much higher than that but for the “interesting” methods the federal government utilizes to calculate the number – the employment situation in the U.S. remains grim. Add to that the massive number of Americans who are “underemployed”… [Continue Reading]

The fact is that there are a large number of very employable people floating around who are currently in need of a job. Each one of them will bring a different mindset and outlook as to what they can reasonably expect to achieve in terms of their next job. Employers, recruiters and HR professionals are now tasked with finding the right talent at the right price, through targeted recruiting and… [Continue Reading]
